First lady Melania Trump will meet in Florida on Thursday with Fabiana Rosales, the wife of Venezuela opposition leader Juan Guaido, President Trump said Wednesday.
“I greatly appreciate that she is here and she has been a tremendous representative for her country,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office during a meeting with Rosales. “And she’s meeting tomorrow with the first lady of the United States in Florida. They are meeting tomorrow.”
The gathering between Melania Trump and Rosales will take place at Mar-a-Lago, President Trump’s property in Palm Beach, Florida.
Rosales, 26, is an activist and considered the first lady of Venezuela by supporters of her husband. The Trump administration recognized Guaido, leader of the opposition party, as Venezuela’s interim president in January.
Despite the support for Guaido from Western and regional countries, Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro has maintained his grip on the country’s military and state functions.
President Trump has repeatedly said he has not ruled out any options for removing Maduro from power, including military force.
“Other than military you can’t get any more pressure than they have,” Trump told reporters. “All options are open.”
