VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — The 16,000 U.S. Navy Seabees who deploy worldwide have a new headquarters in Virginia.
The 1st Naval Construction Division dedicated the headquarters Friday at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach. The $11.5 million, 28,330-square-foot building will serve as the operational nerve center for Seabees who provide military construction support and humanitarian assistance around the globe.
The building was dedicated in honor of the late Lt. Carl Milford Olson, who helped develop and build many of the fittings and attachments used in Seabee pontoon causeways. He was killed on a beachhead at Salerno, Italy, Sept. 13, 1943.
