Report: Suspected shooter belonged to anti-government group

The suspect killed by police in the Baton Rouge shootings was from Missouri and was affiliated with an anti-government organization, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Journal initially reported the name of the organization as the “New Freedom Group” but then deleted the title from the story.

Other reports identified the shooter as Kansas City, Mo., resident Gavin Long. CBS News reported that Long committed the killings on his 29th birthday.

Long was in the Marines and left in 2010 with an honorable discharge. His final Marine rank was E-5, according to CBS.

Two other “persons of interest” who have been detained by police were captured in Louisiana across the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge, the Journal report states. But as of early evening reports suggested Long probably acted alone.

The suspect is African-American, according to the Journal, as is one of the police officers killed.

The report cites “a person briefed on the investigation.”
