WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for the District of Columbia are asking a judge to return full control over the transportation of special education students to the city, years after problems led to a lawsuit over the issue.
Lawyers said in a document filed Thursday in federal court in Washington that the city has demonstrated it can provide safe and reliable school transportation to over 3,300 special education students.
Bus service for special needs students has been under federal court supervision for years as part of a 1995 class action lawsuit. Problems with transportation included an insufficient number of buses to transport students and problems with punctuality and management.
City officials now report a 94 percent on-time arrival rate for students. They say that’s up from 30 to 40 percent in 2003.
