King Charles III got frustrated with a leaky pen during a visit to Northern Ireland’s Hillsborough Castle on Tuesday, declaring that he could not “bear this bloody thing” before courtiers rushed in to save the day.
Charles, who visited Northern Ireland as part of a tour of the United Kingdom as the new monarch, was recorded signing a visitor book when the pen began leaking onto his hand.

“Oh God, I hate this,” Charles said in the video while handing the pen to his wife, Camilla, the queen consort. “I can’t bear this bloody thing, what they do every stinking time.”

An aide replaced the pen with a new one for Camilla’s signature, the video showed, as Charles was escorted away.
The incident marked the second time the new king caught the public’s attention over his reaction to pens and ink. The first occurred during his proclamation ceremony over the weekend, when Charles gestured for aides to clear his desk of an inkpot and pen case before he signed the historic proclamation document.
Charles and Camilla arrived in Belfast on Tuesday morning, the latest leg of their royal tour of the U.K. The couple met with dignitaries and were welcomed with chants of “God Save the King” by members of the public, according to the Daily Mail. The royal couple already visited Scotland, where Charles’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died on Thursday, and they are expected to arrive in Wales for a visit this Friday.
