Ripken?s former spokesman opens own PR shop

After working as Cal Ripken Jr.?s spokesman for six years and being in the sports public relations world for more than 18 years, John Maroon needed a change.

But he didn?t want another job.

“I said to myself ? ?I have a great job and a great boss. Why would I want to do anything else?? ”

In the end, it was the blessing of the baseball legend and the promise that Ripken Baseball would be his first client propelled Maroon to open his own public relations firm, Maroon PR.

The company opened its doors during the first week of April and boasts four full-time employees and one part-time employee. Maroon, who is president of the company, declined to say how much his billings are, but said he is about halfway to his goal for the year.

His client roster includes Ripken Baseball, the Babe Ruth Museum, the nonprofit Parent Heart Watch, Greyhound Pets of America and Ziglar Inc.

While Maroon acknowledges that some of his clients are in his comfort area of sports public relations, he said one of his main goals is to expand his client base into other industries.

“My whole career has been in sports PR, but I?m really trying to break away from that,” Maroon said. The agency?s other clients are “out of my comfort level, and it?s really making me expand the way I think.”
