Avoid Beltway in Alexandria this month

Drivers take note: Avoid the inner loop of the Capital Beltway Interstate 495/95 this month.

Road construction associated with the tail end of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project will be narrowing the southern route on the inner loop from the U.S.Route 1 exit to just after Telegraph Road starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, until Sunday, Dec. 12.

Then the Telegraph Road on-ramp will remain closed for two weeks.

Officials urge drivers to avoid the area if possible as traffic backups could be “significant.” They also recommend the following detours:

For the weekend, Dec. 10-12: The Inner Loop exit for Telegraph Road South will close.

• Detour: Motorists should exit at U.S. Route 1 South to Huntington Avenue West to Telegraph Road South.

The Telegraph Road South on-ramp to the Inner Loop will close.

• Detour:  Motorists should take Mill Road to right on Stovall Street to right on Eisenhower Avenue to the Eisenhower Connector on-ramp to the Inner Loop.

The Inner Loop exit for Telegraph Road North and Pershing Avenue will remain open.  All Inner Loop lanes and the ramps listed above will be fully reopened Sunday afternoon.

For the longer term Telegraph Road closure. Dec. 10-onward:
From northbound Telegraph Road, take the new access ramp to Eisenhower Avenue.  Turn left on Eisenhower Avenue and proceed west to the Eisenhower Connector to access the Inner Loop.

The construction work had been scheduled for a week earlier but was postponed due to weather.
