House Speaker Paul Ryan argued Thursday night that President Trump’s decision to launch a military strike against Syria was “appropriate and just.”
In a statement, the Wisconsin Republican said that Syrian President Bashar Assad can “no longer count on American inaction” moving forward after Trump issued the strike. He also hinted that the president should consult Congress on further action in the region.
“Earlier this week the Assad regime murdered dozens of innocent men, women, and children in a barbaric chemical weapons attack. Tonight the United States responded,” Ryan said. “This action was appropriate and just.”
“These tactical strikes make clear that the Assad regime can no longer count on American inaction as it carries out atrocities against the Syrian people,” Ryan continued. “Resolving the years-long crisis in Syria is a complex task, but Bashar al-Assad must be held accountable and his enablers must be persuaded to change course. I look forward to the administration further engaging Congress in this effort.”
Ryan’s comments echo those by a multitude of GOP senators, including Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla.
