Anthony Scaramucci: Trump ‘is making a very big mistake’ in imposing rules on media

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci said President Trump “is making a very big mistake” setting rules for members of the media in press conferences and briefings.

“At the end of the day, the president had a masterful relationship with the press for 45 years,” Scaramucci told CNN Tuesday. “They should really look at the last 24 months and analyze why it’s gone so badly and see if they can come up with a different strategy.”

Scaramucci said that Trump declaring war on the media is not a successful press relations strategy. He also suggested the president’s approval rating would rise by five to seven percent if he did not fight the media.

The financier and political consultant, who served just 10 days in the White House, said the administration would be better off touting its accomplishments.

After a dust-up with CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta, the Trump administration imposed new rules on reporters, including limiting questions to one per person and requiring them to “yield the floor” when finished. The White House rules — none of which have been agreed to by news organizations — say follow-up queries are permitted only at the discretion of the president or White House official taking questions.

Breaking those rules could lead to a reporter’s press pass being revoked.
