Alabama state lawmaker seeks to censure Dem over remarks on abortion, Trump Jr.

The Alabama state House abruptly adjourned after a representative began reading a letter calling for the censure of another member.

Republican Rep. Arnold Mooney rose to read a letter Wednesday calling for Democratic Rep. John Rogers to be censured over his controversial remarks about abortion and Donald Trump Jr.

“Representative Rogers’ comments have brought national shame and ridicule upon the House, and his comments do not represent the Alabama House of Representatives, its staff, or its membership,” Mooney said before being cut off by Republican House Speaker Mac McCutcheon, who said the move was inappropriate.

“Turn the letter in if you wish, but there’s no call for this,” McCutcheon said. The House then abruptly adjourned.

Rogers’ comments drew national attention. In the midst of the debate over the controversial abortion law, he said of unwanted pregnancies, “You bring them in the world unwanted, unloved, you send them to the electric chair. So, you kill them now or you kill them later.”

Rogers later said that Trump Jr. was “evidently retarded. Or crazy. Donald Trump’s son, I know there is something wrong with that boy. I look at him and can tell something is wrong with him. That’s the best defense I have right there for an abortion — looking at him.”

Gov. Kay Ivey signed the nation’s strictest abortion bill into law this month. The law bans nearly all abortions except if the life of the mother is at risk. The law does not allow women to get an abortion if they were raped or the victim of incest.
