Cruz? Hawley? Harris pressed on Jan. 6 ‘consequences’ for GOP senators

Vice President Kamala Harris said she supports a “response” to any criminal activity related to the Capitol riot and efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

The veep was asked about Jan. 6 during an interview with MSNBC’s Joy Reid, a clip of which was aired Friday during Ari Melber’s show, The Beat.

“What do you think should be the consequences for people like Ted Cruz, people like Josh Hawley, who are now being named as we learn more about those who were actually putting together the plan to overthrow our election?” Reid asked Harris.

She was referring to two leading Republican senators and potential 2024 presidential contenders who objected to certifying the Electoral College results.

After a fade-out and an apparent edit to Harris’s full response, she said, “There should be accountability.”

The vice president added, “In terms of elected leaders, to the extent that they were complicit in a crime, of course, there should be some kind of response to that. But also, there should be a — I think, a continuing discussion about the fact that what happened on Jan. 6 was a concerted attempt to undermine the integrity of our elections system.”

The events surrounding Jan. 6 are under investigation by a select House committee, and the Justice Department has been busy with hundreds of prosecutions related to people accused of participating in the Capitol riot. Both Cruz, a Texas Republican, and Hawley, a Missouri Republican, have denied trying to overturn the election and inciting a violent mob, instead claiming they were interested only in election integrity. Harris herself is a former senator whose whereabouts Jan. 6 have slowly been revealed in recent months.

The interview with Harris is expected to air during the 7 p.m. hour on Reid’s MSNBC show, The ReidOut.
