House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi asked House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday to get the House GOP campaign arm to stop using any material hacked by Russia, which has been accused of cyberattacks on both the DNC and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
“It is my hope that you will join me in opposing the NRCC and the DCCC from using any documents from Russian criminal cyber-attacks in this campaign,” Pelosi said in the letter. “Democrats and Republicans must present a united front in the face of Russia’s attempts to tamper with the will of the American people.”
Democrats have suffered politically from the hacks, which revealed internal emails suggesting they worked to thwart former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
Here is Pelosi’s letter:
September 6, 2016
The Honorable Paul Ryan
Speaker of the House
H-232, United States Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Speaker Ryan,
As you know, House Democrats and the DCCC have been the victims of a large-scale and sophisticated Russian cyber-attack.
Russia’s insidious efforts to tamper with democratic elections are already well-documented throughout Europe, in Ukraine, the Republic of Georgia, and even Germany. They have also been known to doctor the documents they release.
Russia’s cyber-attack is an unprecedented assault on the sanctity of our democratic process. We must come together to say that defending our democracy from Russia’s meddling is more important than any advantage or disadvantage in this election.
It is my hope that you will join me in opposing the NRCC and the DCCC from using any documents from Russian criminal cyber-attacks in this campaign.
Democrats and Republicans must present a united front in the face of Russia’s attempts to tamper with the will of the American people.
I hope that we can discuss this important matter as Congress returns. Thank you for your consideration.
Best regards,
Nancy Pelosi
