Democrat Garvey wins Arlington County Board seat

Arlington school board member Libby Garvey won a special election to the Arlington County Board, county officials announced Wednesday.

Garvey, a Democrat, won 49 percent of the vote. Her Republican challenger, Mark Kelly, had 43 percent and Green Party candidate Audrey Clement finished with 7 percent.

The election was held to fill the seat of former board member Barbara Favola, who resigned in December after winning a seat in the state Senate. The board has been operating with just four members since then.

Officials results will be announced Wednesday afternoon after the county’s electoral board certifies the vote. Garvey will be sworn in at 5 p.m. Wednesday and take office Thursday.

Garvey said she wants to help the county set and keep budget priorities and has pointed to her 15-year tenure on the Arlington school board as an example of her experience dealing with budgetary concerns.
