D.C. drivers don’t mind red light cameras after all, and even like them more than motorists in other cities, according to a survey released Thursday.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety surveyed more than 3,000 drivers by phone in 14 cities that use cameras to ask about their experiences with red light cameras.
In Washington, D.C., 78 percent of those surveyed said they support red light camera use. That’s higher than any of the other cities included in the poll. Phoenix, Ariz., followed with 74 percent of drivers supporting the cameras. Long Beach, Calif, showed the least support, with 48 percent approving of the traffic enforcement device.
The group said the findings show that opponents of the cameras may be vocal but they are a minority.
In February, the institute released a study that showed fewer people died in crashes in cities with such red light cameras. But the data for Washington and Baltimore weren’t so conclusive.
