CYCLING

July 7: Confident City Cycling, Washington, 6:30 p.m. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association offers this class, which teaches basic bike riding techniques and mechanics. Half of the class is in the classroom, and the other half is on-bike practicing handling skills. Info: waba.org.

July 10 to 13: The Greatest Bicycle Tour of the Historic C&O Canal. This is a 200-mile trek along the C&O Canal, with no hills and no cars. Organizers promise lots of support and food, and participants can ride at their own pace.Info: tgbt.org.

KAYAKING

July 4: Fireworks paddle, Roosevelt Island. The Canoe Cruisers Association leads this kayaking trip out to Roosevelt Island, with mooring behind the Lincoln Memorial, to watch the fireworks. Info: canoecruisers.org.

July 10 and 11: Potomac Whitewater Festival, Potomac. The two-day festival includes races, a community paddle, clinics, demonstrations and a party. Info: potomacfest.com.

RUNNING

July 2: Independence 5000, Fairfax, 7:30 p.m. Pacers running stores are celebrating Independence Day with a 5k run, starting and ending at George Mason University. Info: independence5000.com.

July 4: Go Fourth 8k, Alexandria, 7 a.m. This 4.98-mile run and racewalk will be held at the Belle Haven Park & Marina. Patriotic awards will be given. Info: pvtc.org.

July 4: Autism Speaks 5K, Potomac, 7:30 a.m. This is the 10th annual running of this fundraiser for autism research. A 1-mile walk also will be offered. Info: autismspeaks.org.

SWIMMING

July 10: Swim for Life, Chesterstown, Md., 8:30 a.m. This open-water race lets swimmers choose among 1-, 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-mile swims in the Chester River on the Eastern Shore. It is a fundraiser for Pediatric AIDS, the Chester River Association and other charities. Info: swimdcac.org.
