These trees are built to last. Baltimore?s Parks & People Foundation on Friday began selling Root Production Method (RPM) trees that grow faster, climb higher and live longer.
Parks & People launched the sale in hopes of increasing Baltimore?s “tree canopy” and generating income for the nonprofit?s ongoing neighborhood programs.
“We believe in the trees? ability to make a contribution to the ecology of the city,” said Jessica Walbridge, Parks & People?s assistant director of social enterprises. “It?s a place that can be pretty rough on trees.”
The group partnered with RPM Ecosystems, of Dryden, N.Y., on the tree sale. RPM has patented an all-natural process that develops a denser root mass and allows trees to absorb and use more oxygen, water and nutrients. RPM trees grow three times faster than regular trees and have a 95 percent survival rate.
Baltimore?s existing tree canopy – the ratio of tree-to-land cover – is about 20 percent, and the possible tree canopy is 50 percent, according to a recent study performed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
The city?s “TreeBaltimore” initiative has set a goal of increasing Baltimore?s tree canopy to 40 percent in 30 years.
Increasing the city?s urban forest adds shade, improves air and water quality and increases property values, Walbridge said. Studies have also shown increased green space has lowered crime and promoted a sense of community.
Parks & People is hoping to sell the trees to “anyone and everyone,” as the trees are appropriate for yards, parks and along streets, Walbridge said. The foundation will invest income from the sale in its other programs and the development of a self-sustaining urban tree nursery.
“Parks & People is really walking the walk. Restoration is a majormandate from their standpoint,” said PJ Marshall, an owner of RPM Ecosystems. “Who doesn?t appreciate an area that has lots of trees?”
