Over the Line Festival at Round House Theatre Silver Spring, through Sunday
It’s just a coincidence that the dates of the new Over the Line Festival at the Round House Theatre in Silver Spring are the exact dates as the larger and more established Capital Fringe Fest.
More or less.
“It is honestly and truly a little bit of both,” said Round House associate producer Danisha Crosby when asked if the OTL Fest was an alternative to Cap Fringe or if the corresponding dates were just a coincidence “When we started looking at the calendar, July was a time that would make sense.”
The folks at Round House had discussed putting together a festival for a while, wanting to incorporate the work of in-house companies and those companies the theater has enjoyed partnering with in the past. Round House was available during July, an off month, so the fest was scheduled then.
Crosby stressed that OTL is not taking on Fringe.
“I think we’re a compliment and an alternative to it,” she said.
The Over the Line Festival will feature more than 10 companies putting on nearly 50 performances. The target audience is broad: Evening performances such as Taffety Punk’s “suicide.chat.room” may be better suited for the adult set, but the Saturday and Sunday morning shows such as “Cinderella Confidential” are family friendly.
Crosby said that offering a variety of performances is in line with Round House’s mission, which includes education, outreach and summer camps for children.
“We were committed to the idea of having a family friendly component,” Crosby said. “It reflects who we are in a bigger way.
Crosby said that things have gone well so far, and would like to see the event return next year.
“It’s absolutely something we hope to continue,” Crosby said. “That’s an active conversation.”
