Major backups at Bull Run Elementary

And you thought that traffic on the Beltway was bad.

At Centreville’s Bull Run Elementary, the line of parents waiting to drop kids off in the morning sometimes reaches 200 cars, according to the Oakton Patch. At Alexandria’s Hayfield Elementary, brave school officials drop the gate at 8:02 a.m., forcing parents who show up at 8:02 and one second to park elsewhere, and walk Precious into the building.

Isn’t this why the county spends millions of dollars per year on school buses? But I digress.

School system surveys showed that parents don’t actually care about the lines, preferring the safety of their own car to sending kids on bus rides perceived as too long (When better to cram for a test?) or walking routes perceived as too dangerous (Kids need to try their first cigarette sometime, right?).

Even so, the county is applying for federal Safe Route to Schools money, hoping to encourage more walkers and bikers by building safer trails and sidewalks.
