Flock to Zoomerang!

Tonight is the night for black ties, gourmet cuisine, live music and pink flamingos. Lips will be flapping for days after Zoomerang! 2006, the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore?s main fundraising event.

This year marks the 23rd annual Zoomerang! Last year?s event, dubbed “Party with the Primates,” boasted 2,500 guests and raised about $150,000 for the zoo?s operating fund. The zoo expects about the same number of people to attend tonight.

“Every year we either sell out or come very close,” said Maryland Zoo Public Relations Manager Lainie Contreras.

This year?s Zoomerang! theme is “Feathers Will Be Flying,” featuring the pink flamingo.

“The flamingos are currently off exhibit, but are moving to a new exhibit so people will be able to see them either later this year or sometime next year,” Contreras said. “Plus, they add a very nice splash of color; we?ve been telling all the guests that it?s black tie ? and pink!”

Zoomerang! 2006 will feature cuisine from 60 area restaurants and live music, including reggae and mambo. Animal ambassadors will walk around with different zoo residents, including penguins and a large snake. A live auction will take place, offering items like a Mini Cooper and a historic carousel animal from the zoo?s retired carousel.
