Sylvia Cordy knows a lot about her clients.
“One client recently told me that nobody cares how much you know until they know how much they care,” the founder of public relations firm Cordy and Company said. “I think he was telling me that to describe our relationships with the clients.”
Cordy runs her company with her partner, John Milton Wesley, three employees and several freelancers. Cordy and Co. has two offices, one in Denver, Colo., and a Bethesda office that was recently relocated to Columbia. “I wanted to be between Baltimore and Washington,” Cordy said. “I saw an opportunity to tap into their markets, which is why we are centrally located. We think we have something to offer both markets.”
Cordy founded the agency in Denver, Colo., in 1983. “I came out of a TV background. I saw a lot of missed opportunities where corporate executives would make appearances on TV or radio, but would not know how to effectively communicate with their audiences,” she said. “I wanted to help companies frame their messages effectively.”
Once she started doing media coaching for clients, Cordy noticed another problem.
“Companies weren?t targeting or reaching the African-American audience effectively,” she said. And her agency was born.
They have served clients like Coors Brewing Co., Bantam Books and the Colorado Department of Transportation, for whom Cordy recently designed a safe driving campaign.
“We have clients that we work with on an ongoing basis, like the National Center for Health Behavioral Change. We designed their internet outreach marketing campaign,” Wesley said.
The company also recently designed a U.S. Postal stamp for the Ellicott City Colored School, a historical center in Howard County.
