Jesse Jackson wants Facebook to halt its ‘Live’ function for 30 days

Rev. Jesse Jackson, progressive activists and Chicago public officials are calling on Facebook to stop its “Live” function for 30 days following the broadcast of a murder in Cleveland on social media.

“The moratorium is … an opportunity for tech companies, elected officials, law enforcement, community based organizations and civil rights advocates and others,” Jackson told USA Today about his proposal.

The Cleveland murder was broadcast on Easter Sunday via Facebook and it took several hours for the company’s officials to be alerted to the broadcast’s existence. The video of the murder was recorded and uploaded — not broadcast live — according to Cleveland.com.

Whether Facebook will heed Jackson’s call remains unknown.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said last week, in response to the incident, that he and his company “will keep doing all we can to prevent tragedies like this from happening.”
