ART FOR ALL AGES
We’d like to wish Artisphere a happy anniversary! Here at Spotlight, we’ve featured a few different events hosted by this crazy-cool urban arts center in Virginia, but in case you haven’t heard what it’s all about, then we’d love to tell you. Artisphere (1101 Wilson Blvd., Arlington) offers a slew of programs including visual art, multicultural film festivals, chamber music, family programs, dance and more. It has three visual art galleries, an impressive 4,000-square-foot ballroom, several theaters and a two-story video wall.
To celebrate its two-year anniversary, on Sunday there will be a free family day open house filled with live entertainment, a mural painting, theatrical workshops and event circus acts! The open house starts at 12:30 and lasts until 4:30 p.m.
FAMILY READING
In lieu of the holiday, the Library of Congress is hosting a special open house in the Main Reading Room. Come listen to reference librarians talk about the Library’s extensive online resources and onsite collections, including services offered for family history research. Miss Delaware Collegiate America 2013, Elyse Millan, will also read to your kids!
There will also be a magnificent exhibition on “Exploring the Early Americas.” You’ll learn all about Columbus’ famous voyage to the New World, his Book of Privileges and his encounters with the Taino tribe.
The open house will be held on the first floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building (10 First St. SE) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Millan will be reading at 11 a.m. The exhibition will last from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
DAY OFF BRUNCH
In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Fast forward 520 years and celebrate this momentous historical occasion by doing what Americans do — eat! Restaurants around town are taking advantage of the federal holiday and extending the weekend by an extra day.
Brunch comes to Monday as Ping Pong Dim Sum’s Chinatown and Dupont Circle locations offer a bottomless mimosa bar with exotic juices for $15 as well as delicious unlimited dim sum for $25 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Matchbox locations — in Capitol Hill, Chinatown and Rockville — are offering mouth-watering dishes such as banana bread french toast and brunch pizza with toppings of scrambled eggs, sausage and smoked Gouda from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
