Commission wants district commander reinstated

An upper Northwest advisory neighborhood commission is calling on police Chief Charles Ramsey to reinstate its district commander.

Acting Second District Cmdr. Andrew Solberg was reassigned last week after making controversial comments, which some people took as raciallymotivated, during a community meeting in Georgetown. His remarks followed the slaying of Alan Senitt, a British political activist whose throat was slashed during a July 9 robbery.

Solberg has since publicly apologized, but he was quickly reassigned pending an investigation.

The ANC resolution, approved Monday, says Solberg has “clearly demonstrated his keen responsiveness to the concerns and needs” of District citizens since being named commander in April. Solberg, the resolution states, “in his general demeanor and conduct has distinguished himself as being fair-minded and respectful of the individual rights of all citizens.”

It goes on to say the 19-year veteran has the “confidence and widespread support” of ANC-3C residents. ANC-3C includes Cleveland Park and Woodley Park.
