Report: 40 U.S. advisers heading to Syria to work with Turkey against ISIS

About 40 U.S. special operations troops are reportedly deploying soon to northern Syria to help Turkish troops in the fight against the Islamic State.

The advisers will be inside Syria in the coming days, according to the Wall Street Journal report, and marks the first time that such forces will work with Turkish troops in Syria.

In April, President Obama announced that up to 300 American special operators could be inside Syria, and officials told the paper that this new deployment will not increase that cap.

Turkey has been stepping up its involvement in the counter-Islamic State fight over recent weeks, including an operation to retake Jarabulus, a Syrian city near the Turkish border. The addition of U.S. forces is meant to strengthen the Turkish offensive taking on the Islamic State and solidify the relationship between the two allies.

With the help of the U.S. forces, Turkey will next try to take control of the Syrian town of Dabiq.
