US readies more sanctions for Venezuela: Report

The U.S. is planning additional sanctions for Venezuela following the country’s controversial election.

The Trump administration is preparing to freeze the assets of up to 20 people close to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to a Bloomberg report. The sanctions may be issued this week.

The Treasury Department has already imposed sanctions on Maduro by freezing his assets in the U.S., banning travel, and prohibiting U.S. business transactions.

On July 30, Maduro held an election that resulted in a legislature that plans to rewrite the country’s constitution. Opposition groups have disputed the number of people who voted and called the election a fraud. Days of deadly protests have followed.

So far, the U.S. has not stopped the importation of Venezuelan oil.
