Three arrested on California beach during stay-at-home order protest

Three people were arrested in California while protesting stay-at-home orders and beach closures.

About 75 to 100 people protested on the beach in Encinitas Saturday morning, according to police. Most of the protesters left when officers told them to disperse. Three, however, did not and were arrested and cited for violating the state’s stay-at-home order and congregating on a closed beach.

“Several protesters walked onto the beach and sat as deputies began speaking to them regarding the county public health order,” San Diego Sheriff’s Department Lt. Amber Baggs said. “The people were given multiple opportunities to comply with the state and county orders. Three attendees refused and were arrested.”

Seven parking citations and one traffic citation were also issued by officers.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and San Diego lifeguard Chief James Gartland addressed quarantine orders Saturday during a press conference as officials hash out how to reopen beaches and stores.

“In Phase 1, we get to run, we get to swim, we get to walk on the beach and you get to fish,” Gartland said. “You come to the beach, you get your exercise, then you go back and follow the stay-at-home order.”
