A group of migrants demanded that President Trump either let them into the country or pay them $50,000 each to go back to Central America.
About 100 Central American migrants made the demand at the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana on Tuesday, also asking they be processed through the asylum system more quickly and in greater numbers, as well as for deportations be halted, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The newspaper reported Alfonso Guerrero Ulloa, of Honduras, told authorities they chose that number as a group.
“It may seem like a lot of money to you,” said Ulloa. “But it is a small sum compared to everything the United States has stolen from Honduras.”
The report comes the same day as Trump sparred with Democratic leaders over funding for his promised $5 billion border wall, over which he has threatened to shut down the government.
Immigration and the danger the president says a caravan of Central Americans poses were focal points of Trump’s 2016 campaign for president and his messaging ahead of last month’s midterm elections.
“The Democrats and President Obama gave Iran 150 Billion Dollars and got nothing,” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning. “But they can’t give 5 Billion Dollars for National Security and a Wall?”
