Matthew McConaughey joins university faculty

Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has been named a professor at the University of Texas’s Moody College of Communication.

McConaughey, who has starred in films including Dazed and Confused, Dallas Buyer’s Club, and The Wolf of Wall Street, has been named a professor at the flagship Austin campus. McConaughey, 49, has worked as a visiting instructor at the school for almost five years and, according to a statement, was named professor in “recognition of his outstanding work as a teacher and mentor to University of Texas students.”

McConaughey has taught at the university’s Department of Radio-Television-Film since 2015 and will continue to teach a “Script to Screen” film production class this fall.

“It’s the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school. Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them,” McConaughey said. “Making movies, turning words on paper into film, is both a science and art – no matter the time or generation.”

McConaughey graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1993 and has since been in over 50 films. He won an Oscar and Golden Globe for his leading role in Dallas Buyer’s Club.

“We are proud to welcome Professor McConaughey to officially join our world-class faculty,” Moody College Dean Jay Bernhardt said. “Matthew cares deeply for our school and our students, and we are thrilled that he shares his time and talent to help prepare the next generation of media leaders and innovators.”
