Santa Fe High School resource officer shot, flown to hospital

The school resource officer who worked for the Santa Fe Independent School District and was believed to have been stationed at Santa Fe High School was shot Friday morning when a 17-year-old student gunman opened fire on campus, a law enforcement official confirmed Friday afternoon.

“We know that there’s been at least six transported, including one Santa Fe ISD [Independent School District] police officer that has been shot,” Walter Braun, Santa Fe chief of police, told reporters.

Houston Police Officers Union President Joe Gamaldi said a retired HPD cop was injured, but did not name the officer.

“Please keep the officers in your prayers as one officer is being life-flighted to the hospital,” Houston Police Officers Union President Joe Gamaldi tweeted.

The officer’s injury comes two days after a separate incident in Illinois, in which a person who had opened gunfire at Dixon High School was shot by a school resource officer, who is now being hailed as a hero.

High school seniors had been gathering in the school’s gymnasium for a graduation rehearsal in the morning when an armed male teenager began shooting. School resource officer Mark Dallas returned fire, local officials have confirmed.

“Preliminary investigation shows the suspect shot at the police officer, the officer returned fire, and the suspect was injured. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening,” the city said in a Facebook statement. “The suspect is in custody and is receiving medical treatment. No students or staff were injured in the incident.”
