A poll released Sunday found that nearly half of young Americans support socialism.
Asked if they agreed with the statement: “Prefer living in a socialist country,” 49.6 percent of Millennials and members of Generation Z, when combined, said they agreed according to the survey conducted by Harris poll given exclusively to Axios. That differed from the 37.2 percent of the total adult group surveyed.
As the methodology breakdown was not provided, it is not clear what metric was used to determine ages of the two generations, but the Pew Research Center defines anyone born between 1981 and 1996 as a “Millennial” and those born after 1997 as “Generation Z.”
The poll also finds that a majority of those surveyed agreed that the government should provide universal healthcare (66.7 percent of total) and that it should provide tuition-free college (56.2 percent of total). Despite that, a majority of both young Americans and the total surveyed agree the government should allow private insurance (78.6 percent and 86.5 percent, respectively).
The numbers are significant, as Millennials and Gen Z are set to compose 37 percent of the electorate at the time of the 2020 elections.
