The Florida Supreme Court on Monday began reviewing a proposed state constitutional amendment that would give felons the right to vote.
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi sought an advisory opinion from Florida’s high court on the proposed amendment, which would restore voting rights to felons except for those convicted of murder or sex crimes. The Florida Supreme Court looks at such citizens’ initiatives to ensure that they deal with only one subject and that the ballot title and summary fairly describe the amendment.
Supporters of the proposed amendment reportedly must gather 700,000 signatures for it to appear on the ballot in 2018.
