Pentagon IG: Mark Center unprepared for move

The Pentagon’s own inspector general says the Army was wrong to claim that a shift of thousands of defense workers to a new office facility in Alexandria would cause no significant traffic problems.

About 6,400 defense workers will be shifted to the Mark Center, site of the Army’s new office space along Interstate 395, by September, causing what local officials have called a traffic nightmare. The move is a result of the Army’s Base Realignment and Closure plan.

The Army’s traffic studies provided inadequate evidence to support the move, according to a new report by the Department of Defense Inspector General.

Pentagon officials have claimed its traffic studies supported its conclusion of a “finding of no significant impact,” and said it would not conduct another traffic analysis at the Mark Center as the inspector general recommended in February.

The Army now has until May 6 to provide the inspector general with a more adequate response.
