Patrick Mahomes wins 2022 NFL MVP ahead of Super Bowl

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes won his second MVP Award Thursday night for the 2022 NFL season ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Mahomes led the Chiefs to an AFC-best 14-3 record, securing the team a bye in the first round of the NFL playoffs, and then defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals to send the Chiefs to the Super Bowl to face the NFC-best Philadelphia Eagles.

“I want to thank God for giving me this platform and putting so many amazing people around me. … Without Him, none of this would even be possible,” Mahomes said in his acceptance speech.

The added silverware vaults Mahomes even higher into the pantheon of NFL greats, and he has only been a starter for five years. NFL insider Adam Schefter broke down just how successful the 27-year-old has already been in his career.

Mahomes ran away with the award, winning 48 of the 50 first-place votes for MVP. The other two votes went to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts and Mahomes were the favorites until Hurts fell off toward the end of the season, in part due to an injury he suffered in Week 15.

Mahomes put up some eyepopping numbers in his fifth season as a starter, with 5,250 yards, 41 touchdowns to 12 interceptions, and a 67.1 completion percentage, per ESPN.

When the Chiefs traded star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins in the offseason, many wondered whether that would affect Mahomes’s output. Along with star tight end Travis Kelce, Hill was Mahomes’s favorite target.

Hill ended up having an amazing season with the Dolphins, but Mahomes and the Chiefs did not seem to miss a beat, still storming through the conference and putting up impressive numbers along the way.

Heading into Sunday, the world braces for what should be a fascinating game between the league’s two best teams. The Eagles are seen as having the better overall roster. The Chiefs are seen as having the better quarterback. In a game of extremely high stakes, all eyes will be on Mahomes to see if he can deliver yet again.
