Coming this week – a little relief for Virginia vets who don’t like to pay for parking.
Starting Friday and continuing for the rest of the year, all active-duty military and some veterans will be allowed to park for free at Virginia state parks, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Wednesday.
“Our brave women and men of the military are called upon to sacrifice in countless ways,” said McDonnell. “This is a small gesture of appreciation for the women and men who have given so much to defend our liberty and freedom.”
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is waiving all parking fees for active military regardless of where they live and for veterans who live in Virginia. The immediate families of active-duty personnel also would be allowed to park for free.
To participate, veterans must either have a retired military identification card or a standard discharge form known as a DD214. Active duty personnel must have their Defense Department-issued photo identification card. Family members must have their government-issued ID card.
