The top spokesman for the Republican party said Thursday he would “probably” refer to a sitting GOP senator in a profane way. Speaking on CNN, Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer was asked about New York congressman Peter King’s comment that U.S. senator Ted Cruz was an “a—hole.”
King, a longtime critic of the Texas senator, said this following Cruz’s convention speech Wednesday night in which he did not endorse Donald Trump and encouraged Americans to “vote your conscience.”
“Are you guys basically in the same place?” host John Berman asked Spicer of King’s statement.
“I would probably use the same verbiage,” Spicer said.
“Really?” said Berman’s co-host, Kate Bolduan.
“I think it’s important that a leader in the conservative movement, who knows what’s at stake—I mean, Ted Cruz, more than anybody, in terms of his background, knows what’s at stake, chose to come here. He could have just said, ‘I’m not coming, I don’t feel comfortable’,” Spicer said.
Berman asked if King should apologize for the word, but Spicer said he would let the New York congressman “speak for himself.”
