Jan. 6 committee Chairman Bennie Thompson is afraid another Capitol riot similar to what took place on Jan. 6, 2021, could happen again.
Thompson, the Democratic congressman from Mississippi, told CNN’s State of the Union Sunday morning that the Jan. 6 committee has to ensure the investigation leaves no doubts in the minds of Americans.
“Unless we get it right, given the attitude of what’s occurring in this country now, it could happen again,” Thompson said. “When I see people legitimizing storming the Capitol and the activities around it, I’m very concerned. I’m concerned to the point that sometimes people feel they can break the law if they are dissatisfied.”
Thompson stressed that America’s differences are dealt with via elections.
“Now all of a sudden there’s a mindset out here that’s saying if my candidate loses, then I can tear the place up simply because my candidate did not win,” Thompson added.
Dana Bash also asked Thompson about whether Republican members Jim Jordan and Scott Perry will be subpoenaed. Thompson said the committee would consider it.
“I would hope that those individuals who took an oath of office as a member of the Congress would come forward,” Thompson said. “That’s why we’ve asked them to come voluntarily, and we think coming voluntarily should do it.”
Thompson said that the Jan. 6 committee would consider other options if Jordan and Perry do not come voluntarily.
“It’s unfortunate that with what we saw on January 6th and most of the members who acknowledged was a very dark day that occurred in this country, they won’t come forward and help us guarantee that it will never happen again,” Thompson said.
The congressman confirmed that if the Jan. 6 committee learned of any criminal activity, a referral to the Department of Justice would happen.

“That’s our oath as members of Congress,” Thompson noted. “So it’s not just that. It’s any of the other things we’re looking at, if there’s any confidence on the part of our committee that something criminal we believe has occurred, we’ll make the referral.”
