At least 17 people were shot across New York City’s five boroughs on Monday.
“Those numbers would be high for a Friday or Saturday, but for a Monday, they are astronomical,” one high-ranking Brooklyn officer told the New York Post.
There were 10 shootings and 12 victims in Brooklyn.
One victim in Brooklyn was a 20-year-old man who was shot to death in the Canarsie neighborhood. He endured multiple gunshots to his torso and head and was pronounced dead at the hospital. No suspects have been arrested in the shooting.
Another man was shot in both legs just after 3 a.m. Monday in Staten Island following an argument. The 31-year-old man is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. The suspect in that shooting fled on foot, according to the New York Post.
In Manhattan’s East Harlem neighborhood, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the head. He died Tuesday morning of the injuries, and police are searching for three suspects.
Over the weekend, more than two dozen shootings were reported in New York City, including the fatal shooting of a 1-year-old boy attending a family cookout.
Davell Gardner Jr. was shot and killed Sunday evening by two men as he was sitting in a chair during a family cookout, according to authorities. He was shot in the stomach and died from his injuries at a local hospital.
The boy’s father and grandmother responded to his death Monday evening on Fox News.
“You can go to hell,” grandmother Samantha Gardner said of the boy’s killers during a segment on Fox News’s Hannity. “Excuse my expression, but you took something that was precious from me, precious from my son, something precious from his mother, and we will never see him. He cannot come back. He cannot wake back up. He was an innocent little baby, and he’s gone forever.”
“For the cowards that did this, you should be ashamed of yourself because everybody talks about Black Lives Matter. What about baby lives? What about teenager lives?” she added. “You took an innocent child from a mother and a father, as well as the grandparents, and I don’t think it’s fair.”
