‘Insidious & hateful’: Rick Wilson takes flak for telling Melania Trump ‘#BeInfected’

Rick Wilson, co-founder of the Lincoln Project, told Melania Trump “#BeInfected” after the White House announced the first lady would be in PSAs concerning the coronavirus.

“#BeInfected,” Wilson tweeted, mocking the first lady’s anti-bullying #BeBest campaign.

Wilson was slammed online for his criticism of the first lady. “This is the most insidious & hateful rhetoric of anyone who exists in political punditry,” Joe Concha, a media reporter for the Hill, said. “Rick Wilson is wishing Coronavirus on Melania Trump. It doesn’t matter if the wish is aimed at a First Lady, or a doctor, a teacher, a policewoman. It is despicable. He deserves no platform.”

“Delete this, Americans are dying,” tweeted GOP Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar.

In response to the backlash, Wilson tweeted, “ANYONE who thought I was wishing COVID on Melania is fuckwit. You know full well it was a riff on ‘BeBest’ and it’s utter failure in the face of her husband’s continued role as Global Troll in Chief and National Bully. That said, fap to your fake-ass outrage all you like.” He added, “None of your fake outrage will matter in a day or two. None.”

Wilson is an outspoken critic of President Trump. His Lincoln Project group was started by former Republicans who are attempting to keep Trump from winning a second term.

The former GOP strategist has come under criticism in the past for his description of Trump supporters as “tin-toothed rubes.”
