Malia Obama secretly traveled to Bolivia and Peru

Malia Obama secretly traveled to Bolivia and Peru late last year, spending nearly three months in South America on an educational trip.

The New York Times reported Thursday that President Obama’s eldest daughter lived with a family in Tiquipaya, a tiny town in central Bolivia.

President Obama had called Bolivian President Evo Morales to request his government’s cooperation in keeping his daughter safe, Bolivian media reported, according to the New York Times.

The 18-year-old, who is taking a gap year before she attends Harvard University in the fall, had a group of American bodyguards with her.

“She was very humble, chatty, spoke Spanish very well,” said Gregorio Mamani, who was a guide during Obama’s trek through the Cordillera Real mountain range. “She was mesmerized by the Bolivian landscape.”

He added the Obama performed chores and cooked with other group members.

The trip was organized through Colorado-based Where There Be Dragons. The trip is advertised on its website as costing $14,555, not including airfare.
