Pre-cut trees are available nearly everywhere, but venturing out to a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm offers a little something extra: pine-filled air, space for dogs to run, maybe even some hot chocolate.
In choosing a tree variety, consider shape, scent, needles, color, branch thickness and vitality of the tree. You can find out more at marylandchristmastrees.org and virginiachristmastrees.org.
Many farms will cut, shake and bale the tree you choose. Some farms do sell out of trees in mid-December, so grab your scarf and your family and head out now.
