Presidential scholar charged in Md. museum heist

Two men were caught with million of dollars in documents from the Maryland Historical Society, and are now being held in jail without bond.

Barry H. Landau, a 63-year-old presidential historian, and Jason Savedoff, 24, attempted to steal roughly 60 historical documents ranging in value from $100,000 to $500,000 during a Saturday viewing of the historical society’s archives in Baltimore, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Police confronted the men outside the viewing, after an employee of the historical society alerted officials to suspicious behavior. The police found a key on Landau that led to a locker stuffed with roughly 60 stolen documents, including papers signed by Abraham Lincoln worth $300,000, presidential inaugural ball invitations and programs worth $500,000, a signed Statue of Liberty commemoration valued at $100,000 and a signed Washington monument commemoration valued at $100,000.

The two men, both from New York, have been charged with theft of more than $100,000. The FBI is investigating with the Baltimore Police Department.
