St. Patrick’s Day is a big deal and all, but credit college basketball fans for letting everyone stay out a bit later on Thursday.
Metro announced on Wednesday that it plans to stay open late on Thursday — closing its rail system at 1 a.m. Friday instead midnight — to accommodate the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament at the Verizon Center.
The agency is also planning to run additional trains to carry the crowds on both Thursday and Saturday.
But regular old commuters should take note: Even with the extra hour and extra trains, the crowds will be thick.
The transit agency is urging those schlepping from work near the Verizon Center to avoid the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metrorail stations entrances at 9th and G Street, N.W., and 7th and H Street, N.W. Use Judiciary Square station at 5th and F Street, N.W., instead.
