Alaskan truck drivers rally to support Canadian protests

Canadian truckers gained some allies in the United States who are joining the protest against COVID-19 mandates in nearby Alaska.

More than 100 truck drivers formed a convoy and rallied from Anchorage to Eagle River to support the Canadian truck drivers protesting in Ottawa, Canada, according to Anchorage Daily News. The event, organized by Anchorage Assembly member Jamie Allard, began in South Anchorage at approximately 1 p.m. and concluded at the Eagle River Lions Club after 1:30 p.m.

“We have to have the shot stamps on our medical cards in order to go out of state, and we don’t want them,” said Jeremy Speldrich, a truck driver with GMG General, Inc. “Mandates should be our choice, whether you want the shots or not.”

Another trucker convoy took place on Sunday, beginning in Eagle River and concluding in Mat-Su. Similar events were also held the same day in Fairbanks and in Juneau late last month, according to the report.

As of Monday, the Canadian truckers have occupied Ottawa for 10 days. A state of emergency was declared Sunday by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, who claims the protesters now outnumber police in the city.

At least seven people have been arrested, and 550 tickets have been issued to convoy protesters, according to Ottawa police. The enormous presence of truckers led local police to encourage residents to stay home during the event.
