Clinton praises NCAA for pulling championship events from North Carolina

Hillary Clinton praised the National Collegiate Athletic Association for announcing it would relocate all of its major games from North Carolina.

“The @NCAA is right to pull tournament games from North Carolina because of the anti-LGBT HB2 law. Discrimination has no place in America,” the Democratic candidate tweeted Tuesday morning.

The NCAA said Monday all league tournament and championship games would be relocated, including the Division I women’s soccer championship in December, the first- and second-round games of the Division I men’s basketball tournament in March and the Division I women’s lacrosse championship in May.

“Fairness is about more than the opportunity to participate in college sports, or even compete for championships,” Mark Emmert, the NCAA president, said in a statement. “We believe in providing a safe and respectful environment at our events and are committed to providing the best experience possible for college athletes, fans and everyone taking part in our championships.”

The move comes after Republican Gov. Pat McCrory signed House Bill 2 into law in March, which mandates people use the bathroom facilities that correspond with their birth gender, not their gender identity. The state has since faced backlash for being discriminatory to the LGBT community.

The NCAA is not the first loss in business for the Tar Heel State. The 2017 NBA All-Star Game has also been relocated from Charlotte to New Orleans. Entertainers have also moved their events in support of the LGBT community.
