Trump: ‘Very happy’ about London’s new Muslim mayor

Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump said Monday he was “happy” about the election of London’s new mayor, Sadiq Khan. The New York businessman also said that as president he would allow Khan to visit the U.S. despite imposing a temporary ban on Muslims.

“I was very happy to see that,” Trump told the New York Times about Khan’s election win, which made him the first Muslim mayor of London. “I think it’s a very good thing, and I hope he does a very good job because frankly that would be very, very good.”

Trump, who called for a ban on Muslim refugees until the U.S. has identified the connection between Islam and the affiliated terrorist group, also said “there will always be exceptions” to the rule.

Khan has previously stated he would not visit the U.S. if Trump was elected and imposed a ban on a religious group.

“If Donald Trump becomes the president I’ll be stopped from going there by virtue of my faith, which means I can’t engage with American mayors and swap ideas,” Khan said.
