HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — Guam’s tax department has renewed licenses for more than 200 gambling machines despite an ongoing fight over whether the devices are legal.
Pacific Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/141OKU7 ) the Department of Revenue and Taxation renewed the licenses for 216 machines for another year.
The territory’s attorney general, Leonardo Rapadas, argues that the machines are illegal because Guam law prohibits the licensing of gambling devices. Rapadas says the law trumps conflicting administrative rules and regulations that say electronic gambling devices registered before August 2001 can still be licensed.
Gov. Eddie Calvo disagrees, saying his legal team has reviewed local laws.
Calvo spokesman Troy Torres says if the devices are illegal, a court would have convicted owners of the machines of a crime.
