Pence: Trump vs. Clinton ‘isn’t one of those ordinary elections’

Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence told Coloradans on Wednesday that the presidential race did not offer the usual choice between a Republican and a Democrat.

Instead, the Indiana governor pitched it as a contest about whether to go up or down and said that the 2016 race is certainly “isn’t one of those ordinary elections.”

“This isn’t really even a choice between left and right or Republican or Democrat,” Pence said at a rodeo in Durango. “To me, as Ronald Reagan said back in 1964, this is a choice between up and down.”

Pence proceeded to explain that the country could go downhill to a “weaker” America or turn around and climb uphill to a “stronger” America.

But the comparison to 1964 may be a perilous one for Donald Trump’s running mate. In 1964, GOP nominee Barry Goldwater lost in a landslide — by more than 20 percentage points nationwide. Trump has fallen behind Hillary Clinton by 7 percentage points on average in RealClearPolitics’ average of national polls this month.
