Huguely’s father charged with drunken driving in Montgomery County

The father of the former University of Virginia lacrosse player who has been charged with the murder of U.Va. lacrosse player Yeardley Love faces three drunken-driving-related charges in Montgomery County. George Wesley Huguely IV, an area real estate developer, was arrested on Shady Grove Road near Piney Meetinghouse Road at 9:48 p.m. on Sept. 20 after a Montgomery County police officer observed a dispute between him and two joggers, according to a police spokeswoman. Words were exchanged and one of the joggers hit Huguely’s black Chevrolet Suburban.

After Huguely drove away, the police officer followed him and watched as he drove erratically and failed to stop at a red light. The officer pulled him over, which resulted in charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol and failure to obey properly placed traffic control device instructions.

The police would not reveal the results of Huguely’s Breathalyzer test or release the incident report, citing a county legal opinion that releasing the report would infringe upon Huguely’s right to a fair trial.

The Montgomery County District Court said they couldn’t release any information because the court date has not yet been set.

Huguely’s 24- year-old son is awaiting trial on first-degree murder charges involving the death of his college girlfriend in May 2010. In addition to first-degree murder, he has been charged with felony murder, robbery, burglary, entering a house with intent to commit a felony and grand larceny.

A Chevy Chase resident and graduate of the Landon School in Bethesda, Huguely is accused of beating Love and leaving her to die in her Charlottesville apartment.

He has been held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail since his arrest. The trial is set to begin in February.
