Wal-Mart will close two retail-only locations in Baltimore and Anne Arundel counties and launch three new supercenters in time for the 2007 holiday shopping season. Two centers will replace existing locations in Glen Burnie and Cockeysville and one will be built in Arbutus. The supercenters will have both goods departments and a grocery store.
“Wal-Mart is a good customer, and we have some great plans for this area,” said Eric Regelin, president of Atlantic Builders Group Inc., the group chosen to develop the three new locations. “We understand they have some other projects coming up, and we hope to be part of those, too.”
Atlantic Builders has a $40 million contract for the construction of all three locations. The Hunt Valley and Arbutus construction has started, and the work in Glen Burnie is about ready to get under way, Regelin said. Sizes of the facilities will range from about 204,000 square feet to just under 230,000 square feet.
“I support the mixed-use transit-oriented project where the infrastructure is adequate to service that development,” Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold said. “The Glen Burnie project meets that criteria.”
In 2006, Wal-Mart collected more than $120.4 million in sales tax and paid more than $16.8 million in state and local taxes, its media department said. Wal-Mart employs more than 15,500 people in Maryland.
