D.C. police have arrested a 21-year-old man on a murder charge in connection with the U Street funeral shooting, and officers are looking for a second suspect and the get-away car.
Brandon Miller was charged late Tuesday night with first-degree murder while armed, Police Chief Cathy Lanier said. Police are asking the public to help them find a 2001 white Buick that was seen leaving the area of U and 13th Street NW during the lunchtime Tuesday shootout.
The car might also have been seen in Miller’s neighborhood on Girard Street in Columbia Heights. Anyone with information about the case can text info to 50411 or call (888) 919-2746 or (202) 727-9099.
Police said two masked men approached a group of mourners in a gold SUV and opened fire. The SUV fled down U Street, with gunshots firing from the inside, before it struck a black Mercedes and flipped, resting upside down.
D.C. resident Jamal Coates, 22, was killed in the melee. Police did not know whether he died from the gunshots or the crash.
Police said the shootout was a result a dispute between two gangs whose members that got into an altercation at a funeral for 21-year-old Ashley McRae.
